Former Ghana Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has shared a heartwarming story of how ex-teammate Gargo Mohammed played a pivotal role in his football career by faking an injury to give him a life-changing opportunity.
In an emotional recount, Appiah expressed deep gratitude to Gargo for his selflessness during a friendly match between Udinese’s senior team and Austrian club Sturm Graz. At the time, Appiah was with Udinese’s junior team and had not yet signed a professional contract.
“You still don’t understand. Anytime I see you, I bow because I appreciate what you’ve done in my life,” Appiah said, addressing Gargo.
“I came in 10 minutes to the end of the game; I scored a goal from 25 yards. The next day I saw myself in the newspapers, and I called Gargo Mohammed, I said there’s an article about me. So, I called him and he said okay come to the house. I took a bus, I went to the house and he said, the coach said… ‘Close the door and don’t let him run away.’ After two days, I signed my first international contract.
The former Juventus midfielder played a pivotal role in European football and made a significant impact with the Black Stars, serving as captain on numerous occasions. His leadership and contributions earned him legendary status in Ghanaian football, inspiring the next generation of young players.
