The Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF) successfully organized a national wheelchair tennis camp at the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Court in celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The event, supported by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), drew over 30 junior players aged 10 to 18 with physical disabilities.
Led by national coaches Yahya Macaulay and Philip Plange, with support from regional trainers, the camp aimed to introduce wheelchair tennis to new participants while honing the skills of existing players.
Henry Larbi, the GTF Wheelchair Tennis National Coordinator, emphasized the camp’s significance beyond sports.
“This initiative goes beyond tennis. We are empowering young people to become leaders and role models,” Larbi said.
Since its introduction in Ghana in 2013, wheelchair tennis has steadily grown, with GTF’s strategic plan aiming to expand to all regions. Currently, the sport is active in the Western, Central, Greater Accra, Volta, Eastern, Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo, and Tamale regions, covering about 70% of the country.
“Our goal is to develop a strong pool of junior players capable of competing internationally in the next year or two,” Larbi added.
The event highlighted the GTF’s commitment to promoting inclusivity in sports and fostering the development of young talents across Ghana.
