The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed receiving an additional GH¢35 million from the Ministry of Education to support the completion of processes for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, WAEC announced that the funds were received on December 25, 2024.
The payment comes amid rising concerns about delays in the release of results, which have disrupted academic calendars and university admissions. Parents, teachers, and students have expressed frustration over the government’s inability to fully fund WAEC’s operations.
According to the statement, the funds will enable WAEC to conclude the scanning of objective answer sheets and finalize the processing of results.
WAEC assured stakeholders that efforts are being made to release the WASSCE results by the end of December 2024.
Despite the payment, WAEC has reiterated its call to the Ministry of Education to settle the remaining debt owed to the Council.
“The Council is appealing to the Ministry of Education to release the outstanding balance to enable it to pay Supervisors, Invigilators, script checkers, suppliers of examination materials, and meet other financial obligations,” the statement emphasized.
The Council extended its gratitude to stakeholders for their patience and support during these challenging times. It also shared holiday greetings, assuring stakeholders of its commitment to resolving the delays as quickly as possible.
