West Ham United striker Michail Antonio has been released from the hospital after a serious car accident on December 7th.
The 34-year-old sustained a lower limb fracture and underwent surgery following the incident in Epping, Essex.
Antonio, who has made 15 appearances for West Ham this season, last featured in the Premier League match against Leicester City on December 3rd. He has since missed five league matches due to the accident. West Ham, currently 13th in the Premier League table, will face Manchester City on January 4th in their next league encounter.
Initial reports indicated that Antonio was trapped in his vehicle and required assistance from emergency responders. He was subsequently transported to a hospital in central London for treatment.
Despite the severity of the accident, Michail Antonio demonstrated remarkable resilience. He connected with his West Ham teammates via video call prior to their crucial 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 9. The team paid tribute to their injured teammate by wearing shirts emblazoned with “Antonio 9” before the match.
Following the match, the club announced a charitable initiative, auctioning off the “Antonio 9” shirts and pledging to donate nearly £60,000 to the NHS and Air Ambulances UK charities.
West Ham manager, Julen Lopetegui, expressed his relief, describing Antonio’s recovery as a “miracle.”
Antonio, the club’s all-time leading Premier League scorer with 68 goals in 268 appearances, is now focused on his recovery and rehabilitation.
