President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama to prioritize completing the Agenda 111 hospital projects to enhance Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure.
The Agenda 111 initiative, launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, aims to construct 111 district and regional hospitals, including psychiatric facilities, to address critical gaps in healthcare delivery.
In his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) on January 3, 2025, President Akufo-Addo described the initiative as a transformative legacy effort designed to improve healthcare access and reduce the strain on existing facilities.
“The pandemic exposed alarming gaps in our health delivery system, prompting the Agenda 111 initiative to place a hospital in every district. While progress has been made, the project remains incomplete,” he noted.
He highlighted significant progress on the initiative, with 99 district and two psychiatric hospital sites seeing varying levels of work between 5% and 95% completion. Akufo-Addo also commissioned three new district hospitals in December 2024.
The President expressed confidence in Mahama’s administration to see the initiative through, stating, “I am hopeful the incoming administration will ensure the project’s completion to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system.”
