The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed Swedish football coach Kim Lars Björkegren as the new head coach of the Black Queens, Ghana’s senior women’s national team. He succeeds Nora Hauptle, whose tenure concluded in December 2024.
Björkegren, a UEFA Pro License holder, brings nearly two decades of experience in women’s football to the role. He boasts a successful track record both domestically and internationally.
Coaching Highlights:
Domestic Success: Champion of the Cyprus Women’s League with Apollon Ladies and the Swedish Damallsvenskan with Linköpings FC.
Recognition: Awarded Coach of the Season in Cyprus during the 2020-2021 season.
Unique Achievement: One of only two Swedish managers to achieve domestic league titles in two different countries (alongside Sven-Goran Eriksson).
National Team Experience: Previously served as a scout and analyst for the Finland Women’s National Team.
International Club Experience:
China: Guided Beijing BG Phoenix to third place in both the Chinese Women’s FA Cup and Super Cup in 2018.
Philippines: Served as Technical Director of Manila Digger FC.
USA: Recently coached Racing Louisville in the prestigious National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

The Ghana FA expressed confidence in Björkegren’s ability to lead the Black Queens to new heights on the international stage. The team is set to compete in the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where they are drawn in a group with South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania. The tournament begins from July 5 to 26, 2025.
