Ghanaian comedian OB Amponsah has revealed a sobering truth about the financial realities of organizing comedy shows in Ghana.
During a candid interview with DJ Slim on Hitz FM, Amponsah disclosed that he recently suffered a significant loss of approximately GHC 40,000 from his last show at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
The interview, which also featured fellow comedian Lekzy De Comic and Team Lead for Image Bureau, George Quaye, shed light on the often-unseen challenges faced by comedians in Ghana. Amponsah’s admission highlighted the financial risks involved in organizing comedy shows, which often require significant investments in venue rental, marketing, and talent fees.
“I made a loss of about GHC 40,000 in my last event. I have done five comedy specials and I haven’t recorded any profit,” OB Amponsah stated when asked if they’ve ever recorded profits from their events.
Amponsah’s revelation sparked a lively discussion, with Lekzy De Comic and George Quaye sharing their own experiences and insights on the business side of comedy. The conversation underscored the need for comedians to be savvy entrepreneurs, navigating the complexities of event organization, marketing, and finance to stay afloat.
