The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has expressed concern over the rising cases of meter tampering, which are causing significant technical losses.
At a press conference on Monday, February 3, Acting Managing Director David Boadi Asamoah revealed that about 10% of the 70,000 meters in Dansoman alone have been tampered with. This illegal activity causes meters to under-record electricity consumption.
He issued a strong warning, stating that anyone caught in such acts would face legal consequences.
We will conduct thorough investigations. Law enforcement agencies, like the police, will take over from us,” Asamoah stated.
He added that after police investigations, culprits would be prosecuted, stressing that power theft is a criminal offense.
ECG will not spare anyone—contractor, electrician, or customer. If you are caught, you will face the law,” he warned.
Asamoah lamented that collusion between customers and contract workers to manipulate meters is weakening ECG’s financial position. He stressed that such activities threaten the company’s efficiency and the country’s economic progress.
The government has initiated plans to privatize ECG to reduce losses and improve operations. However, the company continues to struggle due to illegal activities and power theft.
To address the problem, Asamoah called for a strong plan to curb system losses and restore financial stability.
