Afenyo Markin retained as Minority leader in 9th Parliament
Alexander Afenyo-Markin has been officially named the Minority Leader for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 9th Parliament.
His appointment, alongside other key leadership roles, was confirmed by the party’s National Council as it prepares to navigate the challenges of its new minority status in Parliament.
The leadership lineup includes:
– Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader.
– Patricia Apiagyei as Deputy Minority Leader.
– Frank Annoh-Dompreh as Chief Whip.
– Habib Iddrisu as First Deputy Minority Whip.
The NPP is set to meet with its Members of Parliament-elect to outline their responsibilities ahead of the opening of the 9th Parliament.
Afenyo-Markin, known for his sharp legal acumen and parliamentary experience, will lead the NPP’s legislative efforts at a time when the party faces a significant reduction in parliamentary seats.
The 2024 general elections resulted in the NPP losing over 50 seats, leaving it with only 81 seats in the 9th Parliament, compared to the 137 it held in the 8th. Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured a commanding majority with over 180 seats.
As Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin will be tasked with uniting the caucus, crafting opposition strategies, and influencing legislative priorities in a Parliament dominated by the NDC.
