Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has been officially sworn in as the Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament under the Fourth Republic.
The ceremony took place on January 7, 2025, after his endorsement by President-elect John Dramani Mahama. Bagbin’s re-election solidifies his legacy in Ghana’s parliamentary history, following his tenure as Speaker of the 8th Parliament.

Early Life and Education
Bagbin attended Sombo R.C. Primary and Wa Secondary Schools in the Upper West Region before completing his Advanced Level Certificate at Tamale Secondary School in 1977. He later graduated from the University of Ghana School of Law in 1980 and was called to the Ghana Bar in 1982. His further qualifications include an Executive Master’s Degree in Governance and Leadership from GIMPA and a Certificate in Privatization in Public Utilities from Tanzania’s ESAMI.
Professional Journey
He began his career as an Assistant Administrative Officer at the Ghana Statistical Service before working as Personnel Manager at the State Hotels Corporation. Bagbin also practiced law, co-founding the Law Trust Company, where he served as Managing Partner.
Parliamentary and Ministerial Roles
Bagbin entered Parliament in 1992, representing Nadowli for seven consecutive terms. He held key leadership roles, including Minority Leader in 2000 and Majority Leader in 2009. His contributions extended to the Executive, where he served as Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, and later as Minister for Health.
Speakership and Leadership
In January 2021, Bagbin became the Speaker of Ghana’s 8th Parliament, marking a historic transition. He also served as President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Conference of Speakers in Africa.

Bagbin has been active internationally, serving on bodies like the EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly and the Global Organization for Parliamentarians Against Corruption.
