Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has been officially sworn in as the Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
The ceremony, held on January 7, 2025, followed his endorsement by President-elect John Dramani Mahama, solidifying Bagbin’s role as a key figure in Ghana’s parliamentary history.
The proceedings began with Majority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson moving the motion for Bagbin’s nomination. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin seconded the motion but raised concerns about inadequate consultation during the endorsement process. However, the Clerk of Parliament dismissed these objections as irrelevant to the nomination formalities.
Bagbin took the Oath of Office administered by Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo, officially assuming his position as Speaker. In his acceptance speech, he emphasized unity and pledged impartiality in overseeing the House’s operations.
Bagbin, who served as Speaker during the 8th Parliament, now presides over a legislature where the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds a strong majority, setting the stage for a dynamic term ahead.
