The Running mate for New Patriotic Party’s 2024 Presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, quickly took charge when Colonel Isaac Amponsah, aide-de-camp to Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo, collapsed in Parliament. The incident occurred during the President’s 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on January 3.
As widely televised, Col. Amponsah, who was standing in his usual position behind the President, was seen stumbling briefly before collapsing to the ground. The incident prompted audible gasps of surprise from members and guests in the house.
Following this, murmurs and movements filled the chamber as paramedics and some members rushed to assist. As the paramedics helped the colonel outside, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, who is also the Member of Parliament(MP) for Manhyia South Constituency, was seen guiding the medics, directing them to carry the colonel rather than allowing him to walk out.
At this time, notable figures, including the incumbent MP for Adansi Asokwa, K.T. Hammond, also stepped forward to assist.
After calm was restored, President Akufo-Addo resumed his speech. This address marked his final State of the Nation Address before the conclusion of his term, offering reflections on Ghana’s progress and future direction. The cause of the incident remains unknown as investigations continue, with Colonel Isaac Amponsah at the centre of the event.
