The Greater Accra Regional Fire Service has cautioned Kantamanto market fire victims against hastily reconstructing their shops without adhering to fire safety protocols.
At a press conference in Accra, ACFO II Rashid Nisawu, the Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, emphasized the importance of seeking professional fire safety advice before rebuilding. He warned that neglecting fire precautions could result in another devastating incident.
“I have advised the authorities to consult us for standardized structures and appropriate materials before reconstruction. Without this, they risk repeating the same mistakes,” ACFO II Nisawu stated.
He also addressed allegations that fire officers escalated the inferno by pouring petrol, dismissing them as baseless. “Why on earth would anyone put petrol in a fire tender and pour it on the fire? Such claims are unfortunate,” he remarked.
The fire, which ravaged the Kantamanto market, destroyed thousands of shops and left traders grappling with significant losses. The Fire Service urged victims and authorities to prioritize safety to prevent future tragedies.
