The Gbese Stool, led by Paramount Chief Nii Ayi Bonte II, has issued a stern warning against the construction of wooden structures on the Katamanto lands, asserting its ownership of the property. At a press conference, Nii Ayi Bonte II emphasized plans to partner with investors to transform the area into a modern, productive space.
While expressing sympathy for victims of the recent fire outbreak at Kantamanto Market, the chief firmly stated that unauthorized rebuilding activities would not be permitted.
“The land has an owner, so no one should take the law into their hands and build any wooden structures. We will not accept this attitude again. That is why we are having this press conference to inform everyone that we are bringing in investors from April to change the place,” he declared.
To enforce this directive, a task force has been formed to oversee the removal of illegal structures. “We are cautioning anyone who has put up any structures without our permission to pull them down because we will send a task force to ensure compliance,” Nii Ayi Bonte II warned.
The directive follows a devastating fire on January 2, 2025, which destroyed the Kantamanto Market in Accra, leaving traders counting their losses. Known for its bustling atmosphere and variety of goods, the market was reduced to ashes within hours. Heartbroken traders, many of whom lost their life savings, sifted through the charred remains of their stalls in search of anything salvageable.
