- The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr. Eric Nkansah, has expressed optimism that the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results will be released by the end of the year.
In an interview with JoyNews, Dr. Nkansah disclosed that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has been in communication with the Ministry of Education regarding the results. However, he acknowledged that unforeseen challenges sometimes prevent WAEC from meeting its timelines.
“We are sure the results will be released possibly before the year ends,” he stated.
Addressing the issue, WAEC’s Director of Public Affairs, John Kapi, revealed that the government owes the council a significant amount—GH₵118 million—which remains unpaid. This debt, he explained, has largely caused the delay in processing and releasing the results.
“We intended by now to be processing the results, because, as we mentioned earlier, the marking of the scripts for both the theory and practical aspects is complete,” Mr. Kapi stated.
He added that the only outstanding task is the processing of the objective section, which requires specialized machines.
“We thought that by the 19th of this month, all things being equal, we could release the results before the office closes for the Christmas break,” he noted.
WAEC faced similar financial constraints earlier in the year, delaying preparations for the exams until the government made a partial payment toward the debt.
