Ghana’s 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic will be officially dissolved today, January 6, 2025, to pave the way for the inauguration of the 9th Parliament.
The final sitting, presided over by Speaker Alban Bagbin, will conclude outstanding parliamentary business and formally mark the end of the legislative term, which began on January 7, 2021.
The 8th Parliament, historically unique, began with an evenly split membership—137 seats each for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), along with one Independent Member. This balance created a dynamic and often contentious legislative environment.
At midnight, newly elected Members of Parliament will be sworn in to commence the 9th Parliament. This transition includes the election of a new Speaker or the reappointment of the current Speaker.
The 9th Parliament will be tasked with addressing critical national issues such as economic recovery, healthcare reforms, and resolving electoral disputes from the recent general elections. Ghanaians eagerly anticipate how this new legislature will tackle the nation’s challenges.
