The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has voiced its support for privatising the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), aligning with the governing National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) intention to pursue this course.
Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of the IES, emphasised the need for private sector involvement in ECG’s distribution operations, particularly in revenue collection, to address inefficiencies.
“The IES is not against the privatisation of ECG,” he said. “Bringing in private partners to support the distribution leg of ECG’s work, particularly the revenue collection side, is crucial. We firmly support what the government wants to do.”
The IES has consistently advocated private sector involvement, including during the PDS ECG concession era, stressing that distribution inefficiencies are the primary challenges within the energy sector.
Nana Amoasi VII noted that the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) once reported ECG’s failure to collect up to 50% of expected revenue in some months, calling this a threat to its sustainability.
“No business will survive if this is the situation,” he warned. He reiterated the need for private sector funding, expertise, and technology to transform ECG’s operations and reduce technical and commercial losses.
