Globally acclaimed Nigerian artiste, Wizkid, has announced that he is not an Afrobeats artiste; hence no one should address him as such.
In a series of posts on Instagram, Wizkid also stated that he is no more related to anything afro and those who are saturated with Afrobeats shouldn’t patronize his new album which is yet to be released.
For whatever reasons, the “Essence” hit-maker also warned bloggers not to post about his forthcoming album when it is released.
He posted; “I am not an afrobeats artiste, no one should call me that, if you like Afrobeats, don’t download my next album. I am not afro anything. Also, Nigerian bloggers shouldn’t dare post my album when it drops. Una papa!…” (“Una papa” is a Nigerian expression roughly translating to “Your fathers!”)
The reasons behind Wizkid’s statements remain unclear. However, his comments have certainly stirred the pot, sparking discussions about genre labels, artistic evolution, and the relationship between artists and media.
