Asante Kotoko ascended to the top of the Ghana Premier League table with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Karela United at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Justice Blay scored the decisive goal in the second half, converting a penalty to secure all three points for the Porcupine Warriors. This was Blay’s second league goal of the season for Kotoko.
The win propelled Kotoko to 34 points from 18 games, surpassing Bibiani Goldstars at the summit of the league.
Kotoko dominated possession throughout the match, controlling 57% of the ball compared to Karela’s 43%. They registered six goal attempts with two on target, while Karela managed four attempts, only one of which was on target.
Despite their dominance, Kotoko earned only two corner kicks, while Karela earned four. Both goalkeepers had relatively quiet days, each making just one save.
Karela United, meanwhile, suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, following losses to Nsoatreman, Young Apostles, and Medeama SC. This leaves them in 18th place on the league table with just 14 points from 18 games, deeply embroiled in the relegation battle.
Kotoko’s victory at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium extended their winning streak at home to four games, solidifying their title ambitions as they continue their impressive run in the 2024/2025 league season. Looking ahead, Asante Kotoko will face Nsoatreman FC in their next league fixture on February 2, aiming to maintain their lead and continue their strong performance in the ongoing season.
