Former Spain coach Luis Enrique is reportedly set to become Chelsea’s new manager, according to sources. He traveled to London on Wednesday to finalize the deal and could potentially face Real Madrid in the upcoming Champions League quarter-finals.
The news follows the sacking of Graham Potter as the manager of Chelsea FC, who lasted only seven months in the role. The decision was made after the team slipped to 11th place in the Premier League table, which was deemed unacceptable by the club’s American ownership group. The group invested over £500 million in new players during their first season in charge, in addition to the £2.5 billion they paid for the club.
The Chelsea board have already selected Luis Enrique as Potter’s replacement until the end of the season. The Spanish coach has expressed a desire to manage a Premier League team since leaving his role with the Spanish national team after the 2018 World Cup. He previously coached Barcelona in 2017.
Although some reports suggest that Chelsea are still considering Julian Nagelsmann, journalist Fabrizio Romano suggests that Luis Enrique is the club’s preferred choice. The Blues are currently facing a challenging season, but Enrique’s experience and expertise could provide a much-needed boost to the team.
