Nigeria’s Governor of Lagos State, H.E. Babajide Sanwo-Olu cut sod on Saturday, February 24, 2024, to begin the construction of Africa’s first purpose-built sports & entertainment arena known as “THE LAGOS ARENA” project.
Upon completion, the arena which will be situated at the Palms Mall in Lekki will accommodate 12,000 people and will be equipped with global standards of infrastructure especially for live music concerts.
In a statement on H.E. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s page on X (formerly twitter), he states;
“Today was the groundbreaking of ‘The Lagos Arena’ at the Palms Mall Lekki, 1 Bisway Street, Maroko, Lekki.
“Inspired by global standards, this purpose-built marvel will have an indoor capacity of 12,000 people, elevating Lagos to the forefront of the global events space. We welcome strategic projects like this with the completion timeline set for December 2025.
“The Lagos Arena is not just a building; it’s a beacon of possibilities for our entertainment industry and is setting the stage for world-class entertainment.
“Drawing inspiration from iconic arenas around the world yet distinguishing itself, The Lagos Arena is designed to be a jewel in Nigeria’s crown. The aim is to bring Lagos up to par with its global peers, making it a go-to destination for premier international events.”
According to renowned Dj and broadcaster, Abass Tijani, known popularly as Dj Abass, reported by Olele Salvador, the Lagos Arena will be situated in Lekki and it’s designed to host 5,000 seated or 6,000 standing people for international shows, concerts, sports, and other major events in Nigeria.
It will be the largest bespoke entertainment venue in Nigeria, spanning 16,000 square meters over four levels.
It will be able to accommodate large indoor sporting and music events, featuring a capacity of 6,000 for standing concerts and 5,000 for seated basketball matches.
There will be 32 VIP boxes with cantilevered seating for enhanced views.
Additionally, the Arena is part of the new extension of The Palms Shopping Mall in Lekki, with a raised floor to connect directly to the mall.
The facility includes a marshalling yard at Level One for vehicle entry and setup/break-down, a new food court, and animated sculptural façades with interactive audio-visual screens.
