The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has blamed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general election on its inability to clearly communicate its governance challenges to the public.
Speaking on Point Blank, a segment of Eyewitness News, Assafuah acknowledged that the NPP’s challenges during its tenure eroded the party’s popularity.
He described President Akufo-Addo as one of Ghana’s finest leaders but admitted that some decisions made by the President and his appointees alienated the electorate.
“We had issues with governance. Akufo-Addo is one of the best presidents we’ve had since independence. Of course, there are actions and inactions of people, especially appointees, that did not go down well with the people of Ghana.
“There may also be one or two actions of the president that maybe, out of misunderstanding, didn’t go down well. I believe the NPP and its government failed to effectively communicate the challenges facing the nation to the Ghanaian people,” Assafuah explained.
He cited campaign promises made by President John Mahama, including pledges to eliminate the E-Levy and Betting Tax within 120 days of taking office, as examples of the complexities of governance.
“John Mahama said within the first 120 days, he would cancel the E-Levy, Betting Tax, and others. He is now trying to rationalize these promises, but implementing them will not be easy,” Assafuah noted.
He emphasized the necessity of these taxes, stating, “It means these taxes are crucial. However, the NPP failed to carry Ghanaians along in understanding the difficulties we faced as a nation.”
