Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang made history on January 7, 2025, as she was sworn in as Ghana’s first female Vice President. Taking the oath of office, she pledged to uphold the Constitution and work tirelessly to advance the nation’s development agenda.
Her trailblazing achievement follows the election of John Dramani Mahama as President in the 2024 general election on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s journey to this historic role is marked by decades of academic excellence and public service.
Born on November 22, 1951, in Komenda in the Central Region, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in English and French from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) before obtaining a Master’s and Ph.D. in English Literature from York University in Canada. Rising through the ranks, she became UCC’s first female Vice-Chancellor in 2008, championing institutional growth and gender equality.
In 2013, President Mahama appointed her as Minister of Education, where she implemented critical reforms to improve teacher training, enhance infrastructure, and expand access to education. Her leadership has earned her numerous national and international accolades.
