The Chiefs and people of the Upper West Region have called on President-Elect John Dramani Mahama to retain Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin as Speaker of Parliament in his upcoming administration.
In a statement signed by Gbankor Naa Jamaa Matarah II on behalf of the Kaleo Traditional Council and the region’s traditional authorities, they lauded Speaker Bagbin’s outstanding leadership, resilience, and innovative approach to governance.
The statement emphasized Bagbin’s adept handling of a historic hung Parliament, noting his diplomacy and strategic leadership in maintaining legislative harmony. It further applauded his efforts to preserve Ghanaian and African cultural identity, particularly through his distinctive dress code, which has become a symbol of his tenure.
The chiefs highlighted Bagbin’s longstanding relationship with President-Elect Mahama, grounded in mutual respect and years of collaboration within the NDC and Parliament. They believe his retention as Speaker would ensure continuity and align with Mahama’s vision to “reset Ghana.”
“With the NDC securing a strong majority in Parliament, this is a unique opportunity to build on progress and address the nation’s challenges. Retaining Speaker Bagbin would be a step in the right direction,” the statement read.
The appeal reflects widespread support for Bagbin’s continued leadership as the country anticipates the next phase of governance under the NDC administration.
