Rescue efforts following the collapse of a four-story building in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, have concluded, with the death toll rising to 29. The operation, which lasted ten days, officially ended on Tuesday, according to government spokesperson Thobias Makoba.
The building, located in the Kariakoo area—a bustling hub for traders—collapsed on November 16. Authorities have arrested the building’s owner as investigations continue into the cause of the tragedy.
Over 80 people were rescued from the rubble, while dozens of shops that once operated in the building have been destroyed. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has called for a comprehensive audit of all buildings in the area. Businesses in the vicinity have since reopened.
Building collapses are frequent during Tanzania’s rainy season, often attributed to substandard construction practices. The government’s audit aims to prevent further incidents and ensure structural safety in one of East Africa’s busiest commercial centers.
